Meet Warren Blay - The Visionary Behind Scavenger Fire & Safety’s Trusted Fire Protection Legacy
At the helm of Scavenger Fire & Safety stands Warren Blay – a leader whose journey is built on values, technical insight, and an unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property. In this in-depth feature, Warren shares the origins of the business, the challenges overcome, and the vision that continues to guide the company forward.
“We didn’t just want to sell fire extinguishers. We wanted to build a business that people trust with their lives.”
– Warren Blay, CEO & Director, Scavenger Fire & Safety
From the Ground Up: A Story Rooted in Purpose
Scavenger Fire & Safety was founded on a simple but powerful observation: fire safety services in Western Australia lacked the quality, consistency, and compliance required to truly safeguard lives and assets. Back in the early 2000s, Warren Blay, a seasoned mechanical engineer working across heavy mining and industrial operations, saw the writing on the wall – WA was marked by patchy servicing, outdated equipment, and non-compliance with essential standards like AS1851.
“There was a real gap in the market – particularly in servicing standards. I knew we could do better.”
Drawing on his extensive background in engineering and heavy mining environments, Warren understood the critical role that correct equipment and training play in emergency situations. It was more than just a business opportunity – it was about making a tangible difference.
Warren envisioned a company that would not only supply premium-grade fire protection products, but also lead the charge in compliance, service excellence, and emergency preparedness.
And so, Scavenger Fire & Safety was born – a WA-grown business dedicated to delivering compliant, innovative, and trusted fire and emergency solutions.
Engineering Safety: Why Fire Protection?
Scavenger Fire & Safety isn’t just a supplier – it’s a trusted safety partner. Warren’s vision for the company is built on growth through quality. Today, Scavenger proudly serves local governments, schools, councils, TAFEs, mines, and major infrastructure clients across WA.
“Having the right gear saves lives. That’s why we partner with the best – 3M, Ampac, Flamestop, etc. – so we’re never second-guessing our supply.”
“Scavenger Fire & Safety quickly became known for providing solutions, not just sales – helping customers with genuine intentions and exploring every avenue to give the best options for their needs. This is where our company message “Going the Distances Other Industry Leader’s Won’t.” came from.”
Leading by Example: Warren’s Approach to Leadership
As CEO, Warren has led the business through significant growth and high-pressure moments. One of his proudest achievements was obtaining ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) certifications – two globally recognised standards that validated the company’s rigorous practices.
Not only has Scavenger Fire & Safety obtained these industry achievements, but we also continue our constant setting of company-wide codes of conduct which align with Fire Protection Association Australia (FPAA) – where we have obtained and maintained our Corporate Gold Membership.
“Our standards are shaped by more than policy – they’re shaped by integrity. We follow FPAA’s code of conduct, and I ensure our team aligns with that daily.”
Warren’s leadership is direct, values-based, and people-first – he believes in checking in with employees at every level, not just during reviews, but in daily dialogue.
“I speak with every team member – not just in performance reviews, but in real-time conversations about improvements and opportunities.”
Company Vision: Growth Without Compromise
Scavenger Fire & Safety has built long-term partnerships with local councils, shires, schools, TAFEs, and mining facilities across WA. But Warren isn’t chasing growth for growth’s sake – he’s committed to expanding without compromising on quality.
“As we grow, we’re investing in people, training, systems, and innovation. That’s what long-term success looks like.”
The business continues to pursue opportunities in new sectors – while ensuring every product, service, and technician meets its high-performance and compliance benchmark.
At the core of Scavenger’s success are two guiding frameworks: Rotary’s Four-Way Test and the SELL principle – is it Safe, Efficient, Legal, Logical?
“These principles are how we decide everything – from what we sell to how we operate as a team.”
Innovation That Matters: Meeting Industry Demands
Warren and his team are deeply attuned to shifts in the fire protection landscape. From sustainability to smart tech, they’re not just reacting – they’re planning ahead.
Technician Upskilling: All service staff are enrolled in Cert II & Cert III Fire Protection, ensuring site teams are certified to the highest industry standards.
Fleet Sustainability: The business has introduced hybrid vehicles for its sales force and high-efficiency Toyota vans for the service team.
Customer-Led Innovation: The launch of the Elite Series – including fire gloves, smoke goggles, LED torches, and compact safety gear – reflects customer demand for versatile, durable protection products. We proudly developed a more affordable and higher quality offering of products for our consumers – and that’s from being safety driven.
“When customers come to us with a challenge, we don’t just solve it – we innovate around it.”
Overcoming Adversity: Personal and Business Resilience
Growth hasn’t come without its challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic tested the business in unprecedented ways, especially as global supply chains faltered. But one of Warren’s greatest personal trials came in 2012 when he lost his wife while also raising three young children and running the business.
“It was an incredibly difficult time – but with the support of my family and team, we kept going. Today, my son is an apprentice fire technician at Scavenger. That’s something I’m deeply proud of.”
We pay homage to this part of Warren’s life and Scavenger Fire & Safety’s journey. Tragedy was fuel for thrive, and we know Warren’s late wife would be incredibly proud to see the inspiration and life the company has led for her husband and children.
Impact Beyond Business: Supporting the Local Community
Community is not just a buzzword for Warren – it’s part of Scavenger’s DNA. Scavenger Fire & Safety is a proud supporter of WA community initiatives – from sponsoring local sporting clubs to supporting Rotary events and fire safety education.
“Mandurah has one of the highest rates of fire-related child fatalities in WA. Education could change that. That’s why awareness is part of our model.”
The company advocates for better public understanding of fire prevention – especially for high-risk home hazards like lithium battery fires. Warren’s practical advice?
“If you buy one thing today – make it the biggest fire blanket you can get. And keep an extinguisher in your kitchen.”
The Final Word: What Warren Wants You to Know
“We’ve built something special – a business that people rely on in their most critical moments. That’s not something I take lightly. Don’t chase the bottom line – chase the standard. Safety and quality are non-negotiable. And even small efforts toward sustainability are worth it.”
When customers, partners, or staff hear the name Scavenger Fire & Safety, Warren hopes they think of one thing above all: trust.
“Reliable. Ethical. Responsible. That’s what we stand for.”
