Guiding the Flame at Scavenger Fire & Safety - Harry Butler’s Leadership in WA Fire Protection Services at AS1851 Standards.

Scavenger Fire & Safety Team Shot
Behind every successful operation is a steady hand – someone who keeps the wheels turning, the team aligned, and the mission clear. At Scavenger Fire & Safety, that person is Harry Butler, WA Operations Supervisor for our Fire Services Department.

Harry’s journey is one of adaptability, loyalty, and quiet leadership – a man who didn’t just fill a role but became essential to it. His transition from semi-retirement to running a statewide fire servicing operation is a story of opportunity met with dedication.

A Humble Beginning That Sparked a Leadership Flame

Harry didn’t walk into Scavenger Fire & Safety looking for a leadership role – he found one by showing up, pitching in, and always going the extra mile.

“I semi-retired from a managerial job and came on board with Scavenger as a workshop assistant and truck driver – Over time, I found myself doing more fire technician work – and really enjoying it… That went on for a while and I built the skills for the job and respect from the team. When the previous supervisor relocated to NSW, Warren asked if I’d step up- and here I am – and I’ve been here a long while – so I must really love my job.” Harry laughed.

That step turned into a pivotal career chapter. Today, Harry leads a large and ever-moving team, coordinating fire services for clients in remote outposts, major urban sites, and everything in between.

“My job involves a lot of reactive decisions. Clients often change schedules at the last minute, and we need to pivot quickly. My main priority? Keeping the busy teams productive, educated and safe.”

Navigating Western Australia with Grit and Grace

With clients scattered from the metro coast to the most remote corners of WA, Harry’s role spans more than logistics – it’s about trust, teamwork, and flexibility.

“We’re lucky to have technicians who are not only skilled and certified but also committed. They’re ready to travel wherever our clients need us, from urban centres to remote bush communities.”

Coordinating such an operation starts with structure – but relies on adaptability. A dependable office team creates the framework, while technicians and admin teams fine-tune the execution.

“The office staff map out the routes, and then our technicians and admin teams fine-tune the plans. We’re always adapting to real-world conditions… It’s important we’re on the same page before the day starts.”

Delivering Safety That Meets the Highest Standard

Compliance isn’t just part of the job – it defines it. Harry leads with a commitment to Australian Standards, especially AS1851, ensuring that all technicians are not only certified but continually learning.

“All of our technicians are Certificate II qualified at minimum – we always encourage the opportunities to study further than this and expand their skills and knowledge. We provide regular in-house and external training to keep everyone sharp and up to date.”

Common compliance issues, Harry says, often stem from clients delaying service on crucial systems.

“Clients delaying fire panel servicing or forgetting to replace end-of-life extinguishers. It’s something we constantly flag and educate around – I think people and businesses need to be honest to the reality of fire danger and take care of these assets so they can take care of their people.”

With support from the Fire Protection Association of Australia (FPAA), Scavenger Fire stays informed and proactive on regulation changes and new technologies.

“We get bulletins, updates, and training opportunities that help us adapt quickly. We’re all over any opportunity to learn and upgrade our skills.”

Hard Work, High Stakes & Staying Safe

“Seasonal weather, long distances, and communication gaps with regional clients are real factors we manage constantly.”

Emergencies don’t wait – but thanks to GPS-linked asset management, Harry’s team responds fast.

“We know where our team is in real time. So, when there’s a callout, we get someone there fast without disrupting the whole day.”

A Culture of Collaboration and Clear Communication

Even in a technical industry, relationships matter. Harry values the collaborative culture within Scavenger Fire – even when departments have different priorities.

“Servicing and sales are different beasts,” he jokes.
“But we get along well and often bounce ideas off each other. It helps everyone see the bigger picture. I think that’s something we do differently to other companies – we’ve stayed smaller in terms of teams, but it’s allowed us to stay closer and collaborate well.”

Clear communication is the backbone of effective service – both internally and with clients.

“Technicians are getting better at reporting clearly and quantifying needs accurately – they’re already great, but they’re adapting to new systems that roll out as time moves forward – it’s everchanging. That adaptability helps the sales and admin team quote repairs and process invoices faster – which just makes the process so smooth for everyone.”

With a new client-focused asset management system rolling out, transparency and confidence will reach new heights.

“It will give clients real-time visibility into their jobs – improving transparency and trust – even further.”

Tools, Training & Long-Term Thinking

When it comes to equipment, the Scavenger team services everything from the basics to the highly complex. We promise long-term reliability, so this means shifting from reactive repairs to proactive planning.

“We encourage technicians to build strong relationships with clients and proactively inform them about upcoming maintenance needs. It keeps systems ready and reduces surprises.”

What’s overlooked the most?
“Too often, businesses see fire servicing as an expense rather than an investment in safety. That mindset had to shift – so now we’re seeing our team really executing this thought pattern forward to our clients, and that’s been so great to see.”

The Heart of a Leader, The Mind of a Mentor

Harry’s leadership style is grounded in respect, teamwork, and shared ownership.

“You need to be approachable and make sure everyone feels part of the team. I want the crew to know their input is valued. If people feel respected and listened to, they work better – and safer.”

Looking ahead, Harry is focused on evolving the systems and growing his team’s expertise.

“We’re implementing a new management platform that will streamline operations from technician to admin to client. And we’re continuing to invest in technician training so our clients always get the best.”
